The SARTEC K-9 Unit is an all-volunteer unit based in Madison County, North Alabama. The Unit specializes in land and water searches using certified air scenting, man trailing, and cadaver dogs. The Unit can assist in searches for missing persons (alive or deceased) in wilderness, urban, disaster, collapsed building and water settings. Unit members have worked many times with Law Enforcement on Human Remains Detection cases but do not work felony apprehension searches.

Search dog handlers and support personnel receive extensive training in search operations and theory, traditional search methods, air scent and scent discrimination, rough country rescue and crime scene preservation. Many of our members are also trained as EMTs and Rescue Specialists, and support personnel from the Unit respond to assist with search operations and logistics.  The Unit operates in cooperation with other agencies as part of the total rescue operation. We maintain rapid response communication for quick deployment. Fast response can be the key to a happy ending for any emergency.

Although the Unit is based in MadisonCounty, the Unit responds to any location outside this area at the request of the local, state or federal authority. With its unique skills, the SARTEC K-9 Unit stands ready to assist any person or agency upon request as a public service without compensation, and is a Non-Profit ( 501(c)(3) ) Unit.
